Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

As our population ages, the number of geriatric trauma patients seen in our units is increasing. This population has a higher mortality and more complications compared to younger patients. This session applies current evidence and best practices to discuss the optimal care of elderly trauma patients. Strategies to provide quality care for this vulnerable population from admission to discharge are presented in a case study approach.

Objectives

Identify current trends in incidence and patterns of injury in geriatric trauma.
Discuss the unique needs of the geriatric trauma patient based on risk factors and physiologic changes of age.
Describe collaborative interventions to ensure a positive outcome for the geriatric trauma patient.
